This report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) provides statistics and analysis on media freedom around the world and to which extent journalists are killed, imprisoned or otherwise harassed while doing their job. It also provides country specific summaries on media freedom.
The report also tries to tackle the shifting role of the media and traditional (print) journalism in an age where major western news organizations are scaling down, where local journalists are performing ad-hoc reporting that does not reach a global audience to the same degree, and the situation that faces bloggers and others publishing online.
The report contains five Regional Analyses and one specific case study on the Philippines:
-
AFRICA: In African hot spots, journalists forced into exile
-
AMERICAS: In the Americas, Big Brother is watching reporters
-
ASIA: As fighting surges, so does danger to press
-
EUROPE and CENTRAL ASIA: Why a killing in Chechnya is an international issue
-
MIDDLE EAST and NORTH AFRICA: Human rights coverage spreads, despite government pushback
-
MAGUINDANAO: Makings of a massacre: Impunity fostered Philippine killings
